One of Jesus' first commands for those who have placed their faith in Him is to be baptized. Why is this? The word baptism means to be immersed and the act of baptism symbolizes being immersed into the family of God. The picture of baptism is symbolic to Jesus' death, burial, and resurrection. In baptism, a person goes under water to symbolize dying to one's old way of life, then coming up out of water in Jesus' resurrection power to live in the new and restored life that Jesus has made possible. Baptism is an outward display of an inner reality, declaring to all that you have decided to follow Jesus.
