Ephesians: God Made Visible – Week 17

Which point of this week’s sermon was most helpful, challenging, or thought provoking for you? Why?

Going Deeper

The Bible Project video explained the progression from the Garden of Eden, to the Tabernacle, the Temple, the Church, and heaven. As you think about this progression, and the construction/layout of the Temple, what stands out as significant about Paul saying that we are now the living temple of God?

  • Read Revelation 21:10, 22 – What is the significance of there not being a temple in the New Jerusalem?
  • Read 1 Peter 2:1-5. How do these verses and the imagery contribute to Paul’s point in Ephesians 2:19-22?

What’s the difference between gathering as this collective people of God and one’s individual relationship with God? (A) What happens when one of these gets disproportionate attention from the other? (B) Which one gets the most attention from you? Do you see anything lacking as a result?

The “you” in these verses is plural. What are the implications of this on what it means to be the living temple of God? (A) How can you/we be more intentional about how we approach our gatherings? How does the plural influence what you/we do as you go out from our gatherings?

If you look at your life right now, are you functioning as a solo brick or as one being built together with others into the temple? What needs to stay the same? What needs to change?

Scripture often uses the analogies of the body, temple, and marriage to explain what it means to be the people of God. Compare Paul’s teachings on marriage and the body of Christ to inform how we live as the visible expression of God on this earth. What similarities do you see between 1 Corinthians 6:19-20; 1 Corinthians 7:1-5?

Prayer: Listening prayer: God, how do you see our Life Group? What are the gifts you see? What are the opportunities for us to be an expression of your temple? (B) Pray for discernment for one another as you consider the obstacles in your life to being built into the temple of God together with others. (C) Pray for those in your life who are far from Jesus but near to you relationally. How does God want you to extend His love to them and bless them this week?

What action can you take as a life group based on what God has shown you in prayer?
