Growing in Authenticity

Ephesians 4:20-25

Authenticity is:

Ephesians 4:20-25 – Taking off & putting on

Key idea: If we don’t do the hard work of digging beneath the surface, the junk of our past will continue to shape us in the present.

• Take off (vs.22) –

• Corrupted by deceitful desires (vs. 22) –

*Unless we identify the lies we once lived by, chances are they are influencing us beneath the surface.

What is beneath the surface of me that I’m covering up?

We often live believing:

X-Ray questions to identify my driving desires:

• Putting on (vs. 23-24)

Taking off and putting on are a _____________________________ process

Renewing your mind:

According to God’s likeness

• Speak the truth to one another (vs. 25)

This week, find at least 10 minutes for silence and solitude to pray Psalm 139:23-24. Listen for what God reveals in your heart and mind. Use the x-ray questions and the lies we believe points to help you dig beneath the surface. Then share what God has shown you with one trusted friend or your life group leader.

Growing in Authenticity

All of Me – Week 3

Catching Up

What’s the best knock-off purchase you’ve made? (i.e. purse, sunglasses, watch)

What stood out to you about this week’s sermon?

What’s your typical way of covering up what you’re dealing with beneath the surface (retreating, joking, binge watching, busyness, etc)?

Compare Colossians 3:5-10 & Ephesians 4:20-25

-What relationship do you see between “taking off” and “putting on”?

-How have you experienced the negative impact of not “taking off” while trying to move forward with “putting on”?

What would it look like to live out Ephesians 4:25 and how would that change what you tell people about how you’re doing? Do you have someone that you can be honest and vulnerable with?

Going Deeper: Divide men/women (Zoom groups can use break-out rooms)

What did the X-ray questions reveal about the driving desires of your life now?

How can that desire be used to deceive you?

Were you able to spend time in solitude praying through Ps. 139:24-25? What has God revealed to you that you need to “put off” so that you can live freely in Him?

Prayer: Spend time praying for one another based on the above.

Application: Out of your prayer & discussion time, what is one specific step of action God is leading you to take in response to this study? How can we pray for you related to that?

Closing Prayer: Is there someone God has placed in your life who is in need of Jesus? How can we pray for them?
